Lionel Messi led a team of stars when the official ball of the 2018 World Cup was launched in Russia.

The iconic Telstar from 1970 received a 21st century makeover, including an NFC chip.

Manchester United and Real Madrid have been very involved in the testing process before the tournament this summer.

Adidas legends Zinedine Zidane, Xabi Alonso and Alessandro Del Piero made the trip to Russia for the official launch, with Kaka and Lukas Podolski.

And they were joined by superstar Barcelona and Argentina, Messi. Argentina is in action against World Cup hosts on Saturday after a dramatic conclusion from its qualifying campaign.

The event in Moscow gathered thousands of fans as they faced the formation of five teams.

The new balloon is reinvented with a traditional style with black panels dominating the design, as it did in Mexico in 1970 to stand out on television screens. The innovative chip, common to tablets and smartphones for contactless payments, will be implemented for the first time in the history of the World Cup.

The sports company integrated the NFC (Near Field Communication) chip into the balloon for the first time. The idea behind this is that fans will be able to interact with the ball using their smartphones. The ball, available for purchase now and modeled by the Chelsea striker and Spanish Álvaro Morata in the photos above, will sell 100 pounds.

The NFL already has RFID tags in players' shoulder pads to track parameters such as distance traveled and speed.
