Argentina's captain, Lionel Messi, has promised to hike 65 kilometers from his hometown, Rosario, to San Nicolás, in case Albiceleste wins the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He told TyC Sports: "If we win the World Cup, I promise to walk from Rosario to San Nicolás."

Messi admitted that Argentina has almost become "crazy" while struggling to get the pass to the finals.

Albiceleste earned a spot in the World Cup in the last round of the CONEMBOL beating Ecuador 3-1, while Peru and Colombia drew 1-1.

He was a bit too close for comfort, especially when Ecuador was initially 1-0 in this match before a Messi hat trick ruined them.

He added: "I thought we would qualify before, I thought we would win against Venezuela and Peru.

"We could not stop to qualify for the World Cup Ecuador scored in the end, it was so much for me but also lucky not to be crazy."
